Garbage in the River

by Priscilla Gareau Ph.D., President and General Manager, Ambioterra (August 2012)

dechetsIt would appear that certain individuals regard English River, flowing as it does through the Township territory, as an open garbage dump. To be more specific, certain items of garbage such as an old toilet (see photo) have been found in the river. Now, it is important for everybody to clearly understand that English River is a living environment for amphibians, reptiles, fish and birds, as well as aquatic plants. This small river rises in the Adirondack Mountains in the United States, and when it reaches Quebec its water is of very good quality and contains practically no traces of pollution. Inventories of fish population carried out over the past three years by the organization Ambioterra have found that over 36 species of fish inhabit this river, 5 of which are endangered. Considering the abundance of life in this river and the fact that it is a living environment for plants and animals, it is very important to protect it. We appeal to you not to pollute the river by throwing garbage into the water.
