The Hemmingford Environment Committee

by Benoît Bleau  (April 2011)

promenade1The Hemmingford Environment Committee was founded in 1990 in a meeting organized by Hemmingford’s Women’s Institute and Chamber of Commerce. The first mandate of the committee was to organize and run in place a Recycling Service in the town’s two municipalities. Volunteers from the committee ran a roadside pick-up, sorting and transporting recyclable materials for several years.

In 1995, the Hemmingford Environment Committee organized a ‘Bee’ to build the actual Municipal Recycling depot, involving volunteers and local businesses. The committee was awarded the Phoenix prize by the Government of Quebec, for this community-minded initiative.

Over the years the HEC has also been involved in educational projects on Recycling and Composting, roadside clean-ups, skiing and bird-watching tours, and the free distribution of trees to the community. The committee plans to once again give away free trees to the community, towards the 3rd weekend of May; look out for the posters in the village.
