Heritage Hemmingford – February 2011
by Carol Grégoire (February 2011)
It was a cold day last December 5th when the Hemmingford firemen fortified by the presence of mayor Drew Somerville moved the old 1884 Fire station. With tower and chimney detached to allow passage under hydro lines, the building sitting on a flat bed trailer traveled down Champlain Ave. from its Barr Street lot to its new location next to the present fire station.
Heritage Hemmingford thanks all those who worked towards this successful event, namely Trevor Hebert, John Thompson and their colleagues and friends. A radiant Gaetan Fortin was everywhere all at once to supervise the operation and was quite satisfied with its outcome. Come springtime, he will supply the missing planks and will turn this heritage building into something all of Hemminford will be proud of. Glen Hodgins filmed the event and put on You Tube an interesting 8 minute documentary titled Moving Hemmingford Fire Station.
