FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMMES FOR LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
by Ginette Bars, translation Sheila Lord

A wide range of different forms of financial aid programs do exist, but it is difficult to apply for them if one has no knowledge of their existence. I have identified one page of the Quebec Government internet site which provides a fairly complete list of these programs : www2.gouv.qc.ca./entreprises

Hemmingford Township Municipality has for a number of years offered a “Financial assistance program for the development of private sector commercial businesses”.

This programme is intended to encourage the establishment of new businesses as well as the development of existing businesses having a project which would create local investment. In addition, measures are taken to promote the industrial park with a view to inducing quality businesses which could create employment to settle there.

The CLD des Jardins of Napierville, organises several activities and offers a variety of programs aimed at economic development in different sectors. Here is a brief summary of the assistance offered :

  • Services for young entrepreneurs (18-35 years) to give them a good start in planning, marketing strategy, research into sources of financing, etc.
  • Administration of the program entitled “Support for the Self-employed” offered by Emploi Quebec to ap- plicants who are unemployed and receiving or have received unemployment allowances as well as welfare recipients.
  • Annual organisation of “Journées horticoles et Grandes cultures”
  • Co-ordination and development of the ‘Circuit du Paysan
  • Agricultural development regarding reduction of pesticides
  • Social development (Hemmingford Medical Coop)
