Opération Verre-Vert
by Benoît Bleau, translation Sheila Lord (February 2015)
In the December bulletin we told you about a joint activity of the Hemmingford Environment Committee and CAPE (Citizens in Action for the Protection of the Environment) of Jardins-de- Napierville. The purpose was to advise citizens of the unacceptable situation and to propose extending consignation to wine and spirits bottles.
This activity was held on 17 January 2015 in front of the premises of the Napierville SAQ and the Hemmingford SAQ and was a success in spite of the extreme cold. We asked people to bring along their empty wine and spirits bottles to create a media event. More than a thousand bottles were collected and several hundred people were present. We also asked them to sign a petition to point out to the Quebec government that they should review the law on consignment which has been in existence for more than 30 years and to extend it to cover the types of containers and not just the contents. In Canada, Quebec is the only province, with Manitoba, which does not use consignment for wine and spirits bottles. This situation must change. If you have not yet done so, we invite you to sign the petition on the website of the National Assembly at the following link : www.assnat.qc.ca/ fr/exprimez-votre-opinion/petition/Petition-5015/index.html Please act quickly; the deadline for submitting our opinion is 25 February 2015.
