Pioneers in skirts: A celebration of the women of Hemmingford

From the Archives – Mary Anne Ducharme  (October 2010)

One of the ideas for future projects by the Hemmingford Archives is a celebration of the women in this community. Next March 8th is International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. This would be a splendid opportunity to share the personal stories of our own women, past and present, who have contributed to the quality of life of Hemmingford. For one example, the ladies of the Women’s Institute have been on a leading edge of community development for decades. Who are these women? What are their stories?

In order to sponsor this project, the Archives will need your help. Please contact us if you wish to contribute your own personal story, or share the life history of a relative, friend, or neighbour. Every story is unique and provides valuable insight about the role of women in our community history. We are discussing the potential for a public event next March in appreciation of the vitality of our surprising Hemmingford women. You are warmly invited to be a part of this recognition. If you say yes, we will set up a time and place for an interview, and each story will be preserved in the Archives collection, as well as included in our event. Whether you are an individual or represent an organization, you are welcome to participate.
