Shale-mining on our doorstep
Hemmingford Environment Committee (October 2010)
Although Shale-mining seems to be very prevalent in today’s media, few residents in Hemmingford may be aware that Lacolle and Hemmingford’s mining claims for shale have been given to the Junex gas company. The whole Montérégie area has had its gas-mining rights distributed. The Minister of Natural Resources, Nathalie Normandeau does not seem to be very concerned about the health and welfare of the people living in this region. She has refused putting a moratorium on this industry although recent practices in shale-mining in Pennsylvania has caused contamination of well-water affecting both humans and animals. The technique being used is relatively new and not trouble-free. An independent environmental impact study on shale-mining needs to be conducted before this industry moves into the region.
It is really important for the citizens of all affected municipalities in Quebec to inform themselves rapidly on shale-mining and the consequences that such a form of industry may have on their lives. It is also important that they voice their concerns to their elected representatives, at the municipal and at the provincial levels.
Several documents will be made available at the Hemmingford Library. In the meantime, here is a link that may be of interest to you:
